Planning your engagement photos at Albion Basin in Utah

If you're looking for the perfect mountain backdrop for your engagement session, Albion Basin in Utah is nothing short of magical. As a wedding photographer based in Utah, I love capturing couples against the breathtaking wildflowers, alpine scenery, and golden sunset light that make this location truly special.

Why Albion Basin is a Dream Engagement Photo Spot

Located at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon, Albion Basin is famous for its gorgeous wildflower meadows. During the summer months, the basin transforms into a colorful paradise, creating an ethereal setting for engagement photos. The combination of vibrant florals and rugged mountain landscapes makes it one of the best engagement photography locations in Utah. The prime time here only lasts a couple weeks, and for that reason it is insanely busy.

Advice from a local:

Timing is Key – Do yourself a favor and don’t even attempt to do a session here at sunset. It is absolute chaos. There is a very small parking lot with access to the meadow, and they will only let vehicles through to drive up to this parking lot when a spot becomes available - which means you could be waiting in line for 45-90 minutes while the sun disappears. I highly recommend planning your photos for sunrise - while it is really early in the summertime, you’ll skip the crowds and have the whole place to virtually to yourself and a few hikers enjoying the trail.

Dress Comfortably – The terrain can be uneven, so wear shoes that allow you to move easily. The walk down the meadow trail is nice, but the walk back up does have a slight incline, so that is also something to be aware of when you’re choosing footwear.

Check the Weather – Mountain weather can change quickly. Be prepared for cooler temperatures, especially in the mornings.

The most crucial tip:

STAY ON THE TRAIL.

As tempting as it is to want to pick flowers, run through the meadow, or place yourself in the perfect spot surrounded by flowers for a photo - stay within the trail ropes, and the photo pullouts. It is so important to respect the rules at this spot so that hikers and photographers alike can continue to enjoy its beauty every year. The trail guidelines are also specifically posted on Alta’s website here
